So, what do you get with a documentary style wedding photographer? From a few glances I do see a fair amount of bullshitters out there. Maybe to the untrained eye they can be hard to spot. And in saying that, I know with my own client type that they know well what they are after. And I tend to vet potential clients as best I can. Often it is easy to spot the potential from the unpotential, Generally, those who just cast a net out. Barely do that much homework when it comes down to what style photographer they are after. In my view, they tend to price shop. And that market is swimming with sharks too easy to take your money.
But to each his own. I’m just a bot bored shitless with getting enquiries from those who seem to start their wedding photographer search at the high end. They seem to know good work when they see it. Yet vanish into the ether when a price range is put to them. I really wish I’d stop receiving these emails. In fact, I won’t send out any details unless I get a broad idea of
Who I’m working for
How many hours are required
A realistic expectations of what you want form your photographer
A realistic concept of budget and spend
Are you specifically seeking a Documentary Wedding Photographer?
Plus a few more details. This is the general concept of things. It certainly gives me an idea of who I will be working for. But more importantly, are we compatible when it comes to the overall way of working and photography style. A few occasions I’ve been hit with the dreaded shot list. And as I have said before, I will not adhere to this way of working. 99% of wedding photographers do, so I don’t see the point. This goes against my entire philosophy of photographing weddings. And anyhow, how am I meant to know the names on a list??? It gives me the fear just thinking about it.
So, I turn up and I take pictures. I’ll document your wedding day and none of this requires any staging or goofy poses. I’m well aware of how a wedding day flies by in a blur. And I hear countless stories about how a wedding couple have missed the drinks reception, or arrived late at their wedding venue. For me, maximising the time on the day is vital. I don’t like to waste anyone’s time, I like to get stuck wight in.
So, what do you get with a documentary style wedding photographer? Someone who will give you a genuine and vibrant record of your wedding day. Of course I’m talking about the good ones…
